Cathedral Music Trust and Tanner Trust award grant to music at Truro Cathedral

The Cathedral Music Trust and the Tanner Trust have generously awarded Truro Cathedral a grant of £30,000. The grant will be spread over 2 years from September 2024 - August 2026 and will part-fund the existing role of the assistant director of music. The cathedral is very grateful for this award, which recognises the outstanding quality of the Truro Cathedral Choir and the importance of this role within it.

The assistant director, Andrew Wyatt, is the primary organist for cathedral services, undertaking all the preparation involved in playing for multiple services each week at a high professional standard, and helping Truro Cathedral Choir’s choristers and choral scholars rehearse and develop musically. He also manages the cathedral’s Organ Scholarship, a sought-after opportunity for young music graduates to start their career in cathedral music, In addition, the assistant director organises the annual organ recital programme, arranges choir visits to external venues and works to share the cathedral’s musical expertise with the wider community.

The director of music, James Anderson-Besant, said:

“We are very grateful to the Tanner Trust and the Cathedral Music Trust for awarding this grant. It will part-fund the key post of assistant director of music and enable us to engage more widely with our local community. Sharing our love of singing will enrich Cornwall’s already vibrant music scene, while also nourishing our own tradition. This is an exciting time for music in Truro.”
