Allchurches Trust supports St Mary’s Aisle
Support for the restoration of St Mary’s Aisle is gathering pace. Allchurches Trust has awarded £11,000 towards the cost of the repairs needed to make the roof watertight – a very generous contribution towards our overall £404,500 fundraising target.
St Mary’s Aisle is a gem - a reminder of old Truro, it was made from the remnants of the 16th century parish church that stood on the prime town centre site given over to the new cathedral in 1880. It has therefore been witness to the baptisms, weddings and funerals of local families for generations, and still serves as a parish church – the only one within a cathedral in England.
The Aisle is a place of reflection and beauty, but on stormy days, visitors are in danger of getting their feet wet. Water marks can be seen on the walls, and trickling raindrops threaten the Byfield organ, which dates from 1750.
Repairing the roof and gutters is urgent, to prevent further damage and avoid future costs. In total, £116,000 has been pledged so far, and the cathedral is extremely thankful to Allchurches Trust for their help.
Fundraising efforts will continue throughout 2022. The cathedral belongs to everyone in Cornwall, so please give what you can to preserve our sacred heritage.
