Garfield Weston Foundation awards £50,000 to St Mary’s Aisle appeal

St Mary’s Aisle has a very special place in Cornish history – as a parish church, it pre-dated both the cathedral and the City of Truro, and witnessed remarkable periods like the English Civil War (1642-1651) and the Industrial Revolution (1760-1840). More recently, it has been the place in Truro Cathedral where the lives of many amazing volunteers and community leaders are celebrated through colourful ceiling bosses. But, in recent years, the old Delabole slate roof has worn out, and rainwater has damaged the ceiling, walls, and floor.

The worsening situation in the Aisle continues to be a tremendous worry, so it is with great joy that we have learned that we have moved a step closer to being able to repair and refurbish the Aisle, thanks to a very generous grant of £50,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation.

The Foundation is a family-founded grant-maker that gives money to support a wide variety of charities across the UK. Their grant award recognises both the historical importance of the Aisle and its pivotal role within the cathedral. Repairing and refurbishing the Aisle will not only preserve its unique character as the only parish church within an English cathedral, but also make it a more welcoming space for events and activities that contribute to the wellbeing of the community.

This is great news, and we are extremely grateful to the Garfield Weston Foundation for their generous help to restore St Mary’s Aisle – a Cornish gem – to its beautiful best.
