The 2024 Cathedral Organ Recital Series welcomes first-rate organists to play Truro’s acclaimed Father Willis Organ. This week we welcome Emmanuel Hocde.

Bio
Emmanuel Hocdé studied organ at the National Regional Conservatory of St Maur des Fossés in the class of Gaston Litaize where he obtained a gold medal in 1990, then subsequently in the class of Olivier Latry. In Louis Robilliard’s advanced class at the National Conservatory of the Lyon Region, he also won a First Prize. He earned a degree in musicology from the University of Paris IV Sorbonne.
Emmanuel Hocdé entered the Paris Conservatory of Music in 1992 in the class of Michel Chapuis and Olivier Latry where he won two First Prizes, a First Prize for Organ and a First Prize for Continuo. In 2001 he obtained the Certificate of Complementary Studies Specialized in Organ Improvisation at the National Superior Conservatory of Music of Lyon (class of Loïc Mallié). In the same year he won the André Marchal Prize, the Audience Prize and the J. Englert Marchal Prize (interpretation of early music) at the International Organ Competition of the city of Biarritz. Finally, in 2002, Emmanuel Hocdé achieved international recognition by triumphing at the prestigious Chartres International Organ Competition. He won 3 prizes: the Grand Prize for interpretation, the Public Prize and the Jean-Sébastien Bach Prize.
Professional activities – Titular organist of the St Eloi church (Paris XII) – Titular organist of the great Cavaillé-Coll organ of the Laval cathedral (Mayenne) – Adjunct titular organist of the Saint-Denys du Saint-Sacrement church in Paris III – Professor of organ and improvisation at the Departmental Conservatory of Radiation of Quincy Jones of the GPSEO (Mantes-la-Jolie) – Professor of organ at the Departmental Conservatory of Radiation of Laval Agglo.
He has held master classes in France, Italy and Southern Africa. He has recorded numerous critically acclaimed records. Emmanuel Hocdé has performed at a number of festivals and important historical sites in France, Europe, the United States, the Middle East and South America.
The series runs from March to October and each recital lasts around 45 minutes. There is no charge to attend or listen to these concerts. We rely on your support to help with the cost of maintaining the cathedral’s famous Father Willis Organ. Keeping the cathedral’s musical instruments in first-rate condition enables us to put on such recitals.
