The Good Friday Liturgy

This service is characterised by its stark bleakness; it is the service of the crucifixion: there are readings and prayers, and the cross is brought from the back of the cathedral to the front in order for the congregation to acknowledge this pivotal symbol of Christian love. Love? Yes, because Jesus could only show love, even though others wanted him dead; he did not respond to evil with evil, he responded to evil with love and sacrifice. This is why we finish this service by receiving Holy Communion, to show that his presence is with us, even in the darkest times of our lives.
