The Maundy Thursday Liturgy and The Watch

The service draws us to the Last Supper, the last meal Jesus shared with his friends, the disciples. This is the origin of Holy Communion, where Jesus shared bread and wine, said that this was his body and blood, and that whenever Christians meet together, they should do this to remember him. Following this service, the consecrated wafers will be set out in St Mary’s Aisle and here we will pray, quietly, until midnight. At midnight we remember that Jesus was arrested and taken to trial. We take the garden down, and leave the cathedral in darkness, emulating Jesus’s betrayal. This is a most moving service of Holy Week, because it reveals how close friends can abandon the one they love, and that is a difficult message for us all to hear.
