Friends Boost St Mary’s Aisle Appeal
The Friends of Truro Cathedral have agreed to award £10,000 to the St Mary’s Aisle Appeal, bringing the total now available for urgent repairs and refurbishment to over £190,000. The Friends are one of the organisations commemorated by bosses in the Aisle, the ceiling of which is increasingly stained by water damage due to the need for roof and guttering renewal.
Did you know that major repair and restoration projects like St Mary’s Aisle are funded through a mix of grants, donations and gifts in Wills? Caring for the cathedral is a little like caring for our own house – an ongoing labour of love, with a great deal of satisfaction in passing on something precious to the next generation. A good example is the complete renewal of the west end of the roof of the Nave, using slates signed by hundreds of people who responded to the Roof Appeal. Standing on the top of the Marks and Spencer car park is the best vantage point to appreciate the practical difference that such generosity makes – the contrast between the old and new slates is plain to see. St Mary’s Aisle roof now needs similar work, to last it to the end of the century.
The Friends of Truro Cathedral is a friendly independent charity that organises a wide range of enjoyable events to support the cathedral, including a regular coffee morning in Old Cathedral School (next to the Cathedral Green) at 10 am on the second Wednesday of every month. Previous successful projects they have supported include the renewal of the cathedral toilets and the resurfacing of the car park.
