Bio

Hugh Rowlands is a freelance pianist and organist based in London. He is a graduate of Cambridge University, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists. He is assistant master of music at HM Chapels Royal, Tower of London.

As a solo recitalist, he has performed at Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral, Southwark Cathedral, St Albans Cathedral, St George’s Chapel Windsor, as well as in Cambridge and Oxford. His first solo organ recording of the Klais Organ at Haileybury will be released in 2024.

A regular member of the James McVinnie ensemble, he has appeared with the group at the Barbican, Southbank Centre, Saffron Hall and at Bold Tendencies, Peckham. As an accompanist, he has performed at Wigmore Hall and Milton Court. He has collaborated with the London Contemporary Orchestra at London’s Union Chapel, and the Icelandic duo Jònsi and Alex, with the LCO, at London’s Barbican Centre and the Paris Philharmonie. Hugh is a graduate of Cambridge University, where he held organ scholarships at Sussex College, Cambridge and King’s Voices. He was organ scholar at the Royal Hospital Chelsea in 2017. He has recorded on the SOMM and Albion labels, and has performed across Europe, the USA, Malaysia and Singapore.

Hugh is currently studying for a Master’s degree in Collaborative Piano at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, with a scholarship.

Live-stream

The series runs from March to October and each recital lasts around 45 minutes. There is no charge to attend or listen to these concerts. We rely on your support to help with the cost of maintaining the cathedral’s famous Father Willis Organ. Keeping the cathedral’s musical instruments in first-rate condition enables us to put on such recitals.
